Privacy Policy
ScreenTailor is a macOS screen-recording and editing app. We designed it to keep your recordings on your own Mac, and to collect the minimum data needed to run the product and the website. This page describes what we receive, why, and how to opt out. In this policy, "we" and "us" refer to the operator of ScreenTailor (see the footer of this page for the operating entity).
1. Recordings stay on your Mac
Every screen recording you make with ScreenTailor is written to your local disk only. We do not upload, copy, mirror, or otherwise transmit your recordings to any server we control, and we have no ability to view them.
If you choose to share an exported video, that is entirely outside ScreenTailor — for example by uploading it to a service of your choice.
2. Anonymous diagnostics
ScreenTailor uses Sentry to collect anonymous crash reports and error diagnostics. This helps us fix bugs quickly. The data sent includes things like the type of error, a stack trace, the app version, the macOS version, and the type of Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel). Paths that contain your home directory name are scrubbed before sending.
Diagnostics are on by default, and you consent to them during the first-run permissions tutorial. You can turn them off at any time in Settings → About; the change takes effect on the next launch. When off, the Sentry SDK is not initialized and nothing is sent.
3. Website analytics
The website at screentailor.com uses Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand which pages are viewed and how visitors find us. GA4 receives standard request information such as your IP address, browser, device type, referrer, and the pages you visit. The IP address is anonymized before storage by Google.
GA4 is loaded only on screentailor.com. The ScreenTailor desktop app does not include GA4 or any other website-style analytics.
4. Purchases
When you purchase a license, the transaction is processed by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as the merchant of record. Lemon Squeezy collects the information needed to complete the sale (such as your name, email, country, and payment details) and handles VAT, sales tax, and invoicing on our behalf.
We receive a summary of each order (order ID, product, amount, country, your email) so that we can provide support and license-key services. We never receive your full card number or any other sensitive payment data.
5. License keys and activation
Each purchase issues a license key tied to one machine. When you activate ScreenTailor on a Mac, the app sends the license key and a non-identifying device label (for example, a generic host name) to Lemon Squeezy's License API to register an activation. The app then periodically validates the activation with the same API. No browsing history, file paths, recording content, or persistent device fingerprints are sent.
If you remove the license from a Mac via Settings, the activation is released so the same license can be activated on another Mac.
6. Data we do NOT collect
To be explicit:
- We do not upload your recordings, source media, projects, or exported videos.
- We do not collect your real name, address, or phone number.
- We do not track which files you open, which apps you record, or what is on your screen.
- We do not use your data to train any machine learning or AI model.
- We do not sell, rent, or share personal data with third parties for advertising.
7. How long we keep your data
We keep data only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected:
- Your recordings, projects, and exported videos: kept on your Mac for as long as you choose. We never receive copies.
- Anonymous crash diagnostics: retained by our error-reporting provider for approximately 90 days, then deleted.
- Website analytics: aggregated by Google Analytics 4 for up to 14 months, then deleted.
- Order and tax records: retained by our merchant of record for the period required by applicable tax law (typically up to 7 years).
- License activation cache on your Mac: kept while the license is active, and removed when you deactivate the license or uninstall ScreenTailor.
8. Legal basis for processing
If you are in the EU, UK, or another jurisdiction with similar rules, we rely on the following lawful bases under Article 6 of the GDPR (and equivalent UK law):
- Performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b)): processing your license key and activation so that you can use the app you purchased.
- Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)): collecting anonymous diagnostics to fix bugs, and aggregated website analytics to understand which pages are useful. We balance these interests against your privacy and minimize the data collected.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): you can withdraw consent for anonymous diagnostics at any time in Settings → About.
- Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)): keeping invoicing and tax records to the extent required by law (handled by our merchant of record).
9. Your choices and your rights
You can disable anonymous diagnostics at any time in Settings → About. You can also stop using ScreenTailor and delete the app and its data folder (~/Library/Application Support/ScreenTailor) to remove local state, including the cached license.
If you are in the EU, UK, or another region with a data-protection law, you have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to request correction or deletion, and to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Email us using the address below and we will respond within a reasonable time.
10. Your California privacy rights
The California Consumer Privacy Act ("CCPA") gives California residents certain rights regarding their personal information. We do not meet the CCPA's revenue or volume thresholds that would make compliance mandatory, but we voluntarily extend the following rights to California residents:
- The right to know what personal information we have collected about you (covered above in this Policy).
- The right to request deletion of personal information we hold about you.
- The right to correct inaccurate personal information.
- The right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information — we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of.
- The right to non-discrimination for exercising these rights.
11. Children's privacy
ScreenTailor is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 in the United States (in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, "COPPA"), or from children under 16 in the EU, the UK, and other jurisdictions with similar rules. If you believe a child has provided personal data to us, please contact us at the email address below and we will delete it without undue delay.
12. Changes and contact
We may update this Privacy Policy as ScreenTailor evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above; significant changes will also be communicated in the app or via email where appropriate.
If you have any question about how your data is handled, please get in touch at the address below.
